What is a VAR statement?

If you are going to work in the Netherlands as an entrepreneur without employees (so called ‘ZZP’ status), your clients will usually require a so called VAR statement. Clients may request such a statement from you before they will grant you any work, as without they have a tax liability in case your status of entrepreneur would be challenged afterwards. To get a VAR status, you have a/o to prove that you incur entrepreneurial risk, e.g. the risk of a collection issue, and that you have more than one client.

How do I obtain a VAR statement in the Netherlands?

You apply for a VAR statement at the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authorities). Fiscali may provide this application for you and make sure the application qualifies for the required document. Take a look at our rates and contact us to arrange the VAR statement.
