If you live in the Netherlands and registered in your town, your car has to be registered in the Netherlands as well. You cannot drive around with foreign license plates due to tax evasion (BPM and vehicle taxes). Therefore this is checked by the Police and the Customs on a regular basis. Fiscali can help you to register and/or insure your car in the Netherlands. You may cover damages to a third party with a third party insurance (“WA”). This insurance is obligatory. In this case you are only insured for damage inflicted to other, not for damage to your own car. For a small additional amount you can also get theft coverage. If you want to insure your own car as well, you should take on a so called ‘all risk’ insurance.
Premiums are strongly dependent on the value of your car and your past claims. If you are a registered resident in the Netherlands, your car needs to be registered as well. A foreign registration is allowed for a limited duration, but you need to pay so called ‘BPM’ (vehicle tax) and ‘MRB’ (road tax) in any case.
